The NVPAF began receiving MiG-21s in spring 1966, re-equipping the 921st Fighter Regiment. Despite facing larger American F-4 Phantoms, restrictive rules of engagement and close combat favored the agile MiG-21. Between 1966 and the end of Rolling Thunder, MiG-21s downed multiple USAF and Navy aircraft including F-4s, F-105s, and EB-66C. During Linebacker II, MiG-21s engaged B-52 raids over Hanoi and Haiphong, though USAF did not confirm bomber losses to air combat.
