C-130E 62-1787, on display in the NMUSAF’s Global Reach Gallery, was badly damaged in April 1972 during an attempt to drop supplies to ARVN troops at An Loc. With a dead flight engineer, injured copilot and navigator, and fires burning in the cargo hold, the fate of Spare 617 looked very much in doubt, but loadmaster Tech. Sgt Charlie Shaub jettisoned the burning load of ammunition, despite being burned by a broken bleed air line, and pilot Captain William Caldwell managed to get the stricken Herk on the ground safely at Tan Son Nhut, with Shaub directing the emergency extension of the landing gear. Both Caldwell and Shaub were awarded Air Forces Crosses for saving the aircraft and its surviving crew. Spare 617 was retired to Dayton in August 2011.
